Focus Fridays

Prepare yourself, because you really can’t make this stuff up.

Hugo Gernsback was a prolific inventor and one of the pioneers of science fiction. He struggled with various distractions that were getting in the way of his writing.

Noises filtering in through the window. A door slamming somewhere. The telephone ringing.

So in 1925 Gernsback invented The Isolator. A wooden helmet that eliminated 95% of the noise from the outside world. Fitted with two tiny glass windows for the eyes, and an easily attachable oxygen tube in case you ever struggled to breathe.

Poor Gernsback.

But in fairness desperate times call for desperate measures. And with that in mind I dread to think what he would have made of working in 2023. Add into the mix multiple Slack channels, Whatsapp groups, and all the other digital distractions…

He would have felt somewhat overwhelmed.

There's so much vying for our attention. Maybe the only natural reaction is to feel a little overwhelmed?

We launched Hanbury Hall to help with exactly this - to help people avoid distractions and do focussed work.

We’ve been exploring what more we could do on this front. And then we met FLOWN - the pros at facilitating focussed work sessions (or as I like to refer to them 'the GOATs of deep work'.)

So far they have been running the sessions online. But I am thrilled to announce they will be hosting their first ever IRL sessions at Hanbury Hall!

These will be a special mini-series of four ‘Focus Fridays’. Taking place on the following dates:

When:
▪️10th Nov, 24th Nov
▪️ 8th Dec, 15th Dec

If you can relate with Gernsback (but would prefer not wear a massive wooden helmet) then these Focus Fridays might be just for you.
